Alexander Technique, and Integrative Therapy
What is Alexander Technique (AT)?
I call Alexander “the homeopathic Xanax” because of how relaxed it makes one feel. One client stated, “it’s like I’ve been lubricated from the inside.” Technically, it’s just re-training postural coordination by improving body awareness. Together we investigate patterns to retrain the interferences that prevent optimal breath or movement.
Physical Therapy focuses on FACILITATION - turning on muscle. Alexander focuses on INHIBITION - turning off muscle. We are in a renaissance of embodied agency within functional medicine. If you have chronic pain, that’s a great sign there’s not more work to “do”, but more patterning to UNDO. By altering how you hold yourself in everyday activities, you eliminate inefficient habits, heal faster, and live more comfortably in your body.
Referring to INHIBITION as PAUSING, RESETTING, or UNDOING helps clarify the process through better understood cues. PT/AT are not opposite, but complementary. In one study on Alexander + PT, synergistic benefit of both staggeringly outpaces either intervention by itself.
Benefits of Alexander Technique
Body Awareness:
It is an education applicable to your whole life. The freedom and space we create you keep for free.
Pain Relief:
Alleviate chronic pain, especially in the neck, back, and joints.
Improved Posture:
Better “use” of head/neck/spine enhances balance and coordination.
Stress Reduction:
Reduce mental stress through mindful movement.
Enhanced Performance:
Boost your performance in physical activities and everyday tasks.
How It Works
The Technique involves gentle, hands-on guidance (tactile cues) and instruction (verbal cues) to help you become more aware of your movement patterns. Through a series of sessions, you will learn to:
Observe the breath and practice non-interference.
Recognize and release tension.
Develop a more efficient way of moving.
Comprehend and apply these principles to daily activities such as sitting, standing, walking, and lifting.
Trauma and Somatic processing
CST can help access deeply held trauma in a safe, non-verbal way. It doesn’t require you to re-tell your story. It works well in tandem with psychotherapy or EMDR for people healing from PTSD, birth trauma, or chronic emotional stress.
Support for infants and children
CST is gentle enough for babies and is commonly used for birth trauma, colic, latching issues, torticollis, and developmental imbalances. Many pediatricians and midwives refer to CST for non-invasive early intervention.
Body awareness / meditation aid
CST can enhance your awareness of inner space, breath, fluid movement, and stillness—making it a powerful tool for body-based mindfulness, energy work, or meditation practice.
